K - 12 Dance Classes

Stage Door Dance Arts hosts a progressive, fun, and safe program for boys and girls, alike. Classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Intro to Musical Theater, Intro to Lyrical, and other disciplines, especially designed to support a dancer’s technical needs. Each student will have the opportunity to perform in our end of the year recital.

In what class should my child enroll?

Placement in our school age dance program is based upon the skill level of the dancer.  Age, emotional maturity, and work-ethic are other factors that are often taken into account when placing a student. Beginners start in our recreational classes, then may be advanced into invitation-only SDDA pre-professional classes, at the sole discretion of our instructors. Please see our class descriptions below.

Jazz

SDDA teaches both contemporary and traditional styles of jazz.  Our curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with various styles of jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and relevant combinations.

Because jazz requires a sound knowledge of dance technique, it is offered to students who are kindergarten and older, as long as they are also enrolled in a ballet class.

Ballet / Tap Combo Classes

Ballet / Tap combo classes are 60-minutes in length. Students will be introduced to numerous dance concepts and proper vocabulary / technique in an age-appropriate, exciting environment. Students will pariticpate in our annual recital.

Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combo Classes

Intro to Lyrical

This 30 minute class is offered to students ages 6+ who are also enrolled in a ballet class.

This class draws on the fundamentals of ballet, jazz, and modern, but has evolved over the years to pull from every other style of dance, allowing the performer to express personal interpretation to the audience. Contemporary Lyrical is a form of artistic expression that is performed in order to interpret the lyrics and mood of the music.

Students enrolled in the School Year season will perform one dance in our annual recital on June 2, 2024.

Intro to Musical Theater

Intro to Musical Theater is a 30-minute class, offered to students ages 6+. It allows students the opportunity to perform dances in which they portray characters from Broadway, Vaudeville, Hollywood classics, and musical comedies.

Special attention will be paid to song study, character development, entertainment quality, acting, and truth in performance. This class recommended for all dancers.

Lil Hip-Hoppers

This is the perfect introductory class for young dancers who are ages 5-8.  They will be exposed to basic hip-hop technique and tons of fun. This is a great class to get your young dancer moving & grooving.

About the Class:
• Lil’ Hip-Hoppers classes are 30 minutes in length.
• Students receive instruction from qualified dance teachers, while parents can observe their classes. In-class parent observation days will be scheduled often.
• Our student/teacher ratio is a maximum of 10 students per instructor. If more than 10 students enroll in a class, an assistant teacher will be added.
• Please see our Dress Code regarding what your dancer should wear.

During each 30 minute class, students learn basic hip-hop movement quality and steps, participate in dramatic play, and develop skills that will be used for strength and balance in later hip-hop classes. All Lil’ Hip-Hoppers will perform a dance in the annual recital.

Hip-Hop

We offer a variety of 45-minute Hip Hop classes for students who have an interest in more contemporary dance styles made popular by the music video industry.  Hip-Hop is less technical in nature and does not require the student to be enrolled in a ballet class.  Hip-Hop is an excellent choice for beginning level dancers with little or no classical training.

Students will learn balance, strength, coordination, stage presence, and basic elements of “funk” and “urban” styles which include house, popping, locking, freezes, waving, and gliding.

Students enrolled in the School Year season will perform one dance in our annual recital on June 2, 2024.

Intro to Clogging

This is a 30-minute beginner-level program designed for children ages 8 and up. They will learn the basic steps of clogging, which is a high energy form of folk dance, and is similar to tap. Your child will learn dances to popular music and have a great time.

Students enrolled in the School Year season will perform one dance in our annual recital on June 2, 2024.

Stretch & Body Conditioning

This 30-minute class assists dancers with body strengthening and toning, proper stretching technique, and improved stamina. Class exercises will be based on dancer-friendly conditioning such as Yoga, Pilates, barre fitness, and ballet/jazz technique.  Education about the anatomy of the body and good nutrition may also be introduced.

Active Isolated Stretching is a major tool used by students to heal troubled muscle areas, but it can provide numerous other health benefits, as well.  When stretching actively, the entire body, as well as the brain, becomes involved.  With each additional opportunity for stretching, the dancer becomes more fluid and flexible, and takes on a more beautiful line.  This class is noncompetitive, however students will be greatly challenged and encouraged.

All dancers, especially those in a pre-pro company, or on a competition team, are encouraged to enroll.

Acro

Acro classes, which are 30- or 45-minutes in length, teach flexibility, balance, strength, & discipline. Students should always come to class in dance attire with bare feet. This is not a power tumbling class. Only skills that can be utilized in a dance routine will be addressed.

Open to all students ages 5 and up.
